Over at Shelley Batts’ Retrospectacle blog, I read about her Pirates vs. Ninja party, complete with a matching themed cake. Now I’ve never really understood the origins of why geeks put pirates with ninjas, since they originate from different era / locales (Of course ninjas would win won’t they?).
It was until I found an explanation on Wikipedia that life became that much clearer:
Pirates versus Ninjas is an internet meme that circulates in the form of an ongoing debate that asks the question “Who would win in a fight: pirates or ninjas?” [blah blah blah] … a literary tradition that romanticized their often villainous roles [blah blah] … To become involved in the debate is essentially to choose which of the two roles is “cooler.” The humor of the debate lies mainly in that it is often discussed as a serious debate, although the question is clearly anachronistic and a matter of opinion.
Now that it’s been straightened out, what’s with Apples or Oranges? Come on now…
Update: I’m still holding on strong at 12th place thanks to my family and friends rocking their votes. If I were to lose to anyone (don’t delude yourself), there’s a hands-down consensus amongst my academic peers that neuroscientist Shelley Batts deserves to win. She’s got incredible smarts, transforming phenomena in science into everyday art. All I have is a propensity for riches through the virtue of laziness. Let’s not forget, I iz haz no jugz.
