I can only imagine how much hell our power company, National Grid, must be going through. They’ve finally issued a letter at about 4.30pm today regarding what their plans are for restoring power to Buffalo…

New York Western Division Storm Update – Oct. 13, 2006, 4:30 p.m.

The following is an update of outages and restorations following a severe and
sustained snow storm that hit portions of our Western Division in New York late
Thursday afternoon. This information reflects information as of October 13, 2006
at 4:30 p.m. The next update will be posted at approximately 9:30 p.m.

We currently have approximately 260,000 homes and businesses without electric
service in our Western Division, primarily the result of more than 20 inches of
wet, heavy snow that fell yesterday, last night and this morning. This snow
landed on trees that still had most of their leaves, resulting in an extensive
amount of limbs and complete trees breaking, taking down power lines.

Although we had all Western Division crews in the field last night, the number of
customers affected grew rapidly and dramatically during the evening and early
morning hours, escalating from an initial estimate of 20,000 customers at 6 p.m.
last night.

We are now analyzing field assessments reports from across the region,
confirming that our network has experienced a level of damage that is
unprecedented for western New York. As a result, we are now estimating that
we will be working on restoring service through next week and into the following

Restoration began almost immediately on Thursday evening as all local crews
began work on emergency and life-threatening situations. As more National Grid
and mutual aid crews arrive in Western New York and are assigned, we expect
the pace of restoration to accelerate dramatically tomorrow and Sunday.
