CurrentStatus: I’m taking you to work today…

Current working conditions...

Currently Watching…
The left-most Dell PC is running all my monitoring / surveillance tasks. Right now I have it auto-switching between news feeds such as Digg Spy, as well as an iSight webcam I have planted facing the ETC Front Desk. The staff know about the camera, so sometimes we turn it off when people feel embarrased working in front of it.

Currently Working…
The center left 20″ Apple Cinema Display is hooked up to a G5 and it’s my video workstation as well as do other ETC projects as such as producing help guides (brochures) and workshop instructions. Right now I’m backing up lots of digital video onto DVD-Rs and listening to some Kayne West via iTunes.

Currently Blogging…
The center MacBook Pro is where I do most of my blogging since I have all my favorite apps for producing web content. Depending on how much I need it, this laptop is heavier than my 12″ Powerbook, so sometimes I end up leaving it at home. In those situations, I fall back on the PowerMac G5 and do all my blog reading and writing through various web-based apps, such as Meebo (IM), Gmail (email), NewsGator (RSS newsreader), Flickr (image archival), and Wikispaces (project-tracking, to-dos, draft documentations). I love Web 2.0!

Currently Fixing…
Our ever-cheerful ETC receptionist had a computer problem yesterday. The right most computer is her son’s Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. It recently got a nasty virus which I’ve diagnosed as the WinFixer (aka WinAntiVirus, ErrorSafe) trojan. This bloody trojan keeps popping out browser windows and error messages saying that you need to buy the WinAntiVirus program to fix it, which is bogus to me of course! I can’t imagine all the poor folks who’d heed that warning though, and lose their money to some company in the Ukriane in the process (DMCA doesn’t cover Russia). Since the machine’s in such a mess, I’ve decided to reformat it and give it all the protection it needs. While I explained to the owner how it’s important to let Windows Updates download regularly, she said that they only have a modem connection at their farmhouse, which is why they’re not as connected like some of us. Hmm, looks like we need to rethink this system of updating OSes… if only updates can work like viruses themselves, since viruses do such a good job getting on everyone’s PCs.

Currently Stealing…
Chris is over there stealing some candy from my desk… I brought in all the stuff Penny and I got tired of eating to share with everyone. Some date back to the last Halloween though. Shh… just don’t tell anyone.

  1. True True. I’m currently snacking on a carrot cake muffin while gulping down on Vitamin Water, lemonade flavor. What are you having?

  2. well he can turn it off, i do that all the time. but perhaps just make sure there’s a virus scan on a weekly basis (that could take ages and ages) using something that’s not norton. for updates, i believe he can just download the .exe file from somewhere, at least i used to. then he can just go borrow someone else’s net (or the uni net) to download them every now and then.

a bit more complicated i think, but it’s the bad connection way of doing things.

  3. iWant: Male2Male bitchin’ isn’t cool dude, you need a wifey! čśŤ

Panda: It’s not normal to expect people to download updates manually. They end up skipping something important and then the viruses hit. Oh well…

  4. Hi Kevin,
The URL for Wikispaces is wrong. There should be a ‘s’ at the end.

Anyway, a very informative blog which is in my RSS aggregator.
