Interesting factoids we’ve realized…
The real major difference I see in these MacBooks and their Pro counterparts is the graphics chip used. The MacBooks come with an integrated Intel graphics 64MB chip, which won’t be able to stand up against the MacBook Pro’s ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics processor, with 256MB of GDDR3. Also, these MacBooks, as well as custom-built Pro versions, now come with a new glossy screen finish which is said to give a higher contrast to the screen. As notes, the iBook G4 and 12″ Powerbook G4 have been dropped from the Apple Store.

That’s not all… what about us MacBook Pro owners?
Apple quietly changed the MacBook Pro pricing… in a sneaky way. The lineup currently stands as:
15.4″ 2.0Ghz Core Duo, $1,999
15.4″ 2.16Ghz Core Duo, $2,499
17″ 2.16Ghz Core Duo, $2,799

As you can see, each MacBook Pro has been speed bumped to the next better processor, but in keeping with their previous price points. However, Peter was sharp to note that Apple also kept with the previous configurations, including 512MB ram and 80gb hard drive. I noticed that buying a 2Ghz core duo MacBook Pro also ends up giving you less video memory, from our current 256MB of GDDR3, to a lesser 128MB. This means that for what we’ve paid for existing MacBook Pros, the loss isn’t as great as you’d imagine, since new MacBook Pro owners still need to upgrade their machines to match previous specs (e.g. Custom-built with 1gb ram, 100gb hard drive, 256MB graphics memory).

UPDATE: Peter notes that you can now get MacBook Pros cheap on Apple’s Refurb deals page… $1599 for a 1.83Ghz MacBook Pro is plain ridiculous!

UPDATE 3: Roger’s first to buy the black MacBook and post unpacking photos on Flickr!

  1. Ouch. Early adopter penalty right in the box :). The comparison chart is one of the most boring I’ve ever seen: they look to be much the same machines. Even the weight is pretty close, despite the different sizes. Extra 1.5 hours of battery life on the MacBooks, and no ExpressCard. Which means instead of using one of the new evdo cards, you are stuck with a Bluetooth tether to a EVDO capabale mobile phone for broadband internet–which may not be so bad. I’d go with the MacBook, but too late for me, I fear.

  2. No real loss Alex, the MacBook Pros are still tremendous value, since the mobo has more headroom for speed compared to the MacBooks. Personally, I like smaller machines though…

  3. OMG!!! whheee i love apple…. yay yay…

sorry, i am just trying to contain myself. then again, since i am so broke at the moment, i shall aim for a year end purchase, more because i am waiting for leopard’s appearance as well. ^_^

    thanks Kevin
