State of the Blogosphere: Forget advertising on Superbowl…


Summary for Technorati’s State of the Blogosphere (April 2006):

  • Technorati now tracks over 35.3 Million blogs
  • The blogosphere is doubling in size every 6 months
  • It is now over 60 times bigger than it was 3 years ago
  • On average, a new weblog is created every second of every day
  • 19.4 million bloggers (55%) are still posting 3 months after their blogs are created
  • Technorati tracks about 1.2 Million new blog posts each day, about 50,000 per hour

The State of the Blogosphere reports are so consistent, especially in terms of blog growth, that it’s almost textbook-like. Steve Rubel of Micro Persuasion asked where the surge in MySpace blogs went, and his readers responded with how most MySpace users don’t even have blogs; these kids are really using it for other communicative purposes (e.g. Instant Messenging). Even so, MySpace might help account for the doubling effect, which IMHO, I expected to taper off sooner than later.

As seen in the Daily Posting Volume chart above, it’s interesting how Sifry accounted for most of the spikes, yet some of the dips (especially the one after the London Bombing) are unaccounted for. Perhaps a blog service outage like in TypePad’s case?

Finally, here’s my opporunity for advertisers… forget SuperBowl. Apple Video iPods and Intel Macs capture bloggers’ attention more so than national disasters, let alone sporting events. Next time Apple makes an announcement, be ready to spring your own on blogs and web sites everywhere.
