Our Christmas Gift: Ultima V – Lazarus

Ultima V: Lazarus

Have you ever played Ultima? I used to spend so much of my childhood in front of the green florescent screen of the Apple II playing Ultima III, which was a really really absorbing RPG back in the hey days. I even remembered the manual being a thick book of lore, which is a rare find nowadays in games we buy.

For the geeks out there who’d trade good gameplay for sexy graphics anytime, here’s Ultima V: Lazarus, a ressurection of the Ultima V game as a mod on the spanky Dungeon Siege engine.

Kotaku notes that this team of 30 developers took five years to put together an amazing rework of Origin Systems’ Ultima V from 1987. The new version is in fact a mod built on the Dungeon Siege engine and features an enhanced storyline, characters and settings all based on the original game. It also includes new side quests, a deeper richer plot and enhanced dialogue. The game is the first Ultima remake project to ever actually reach the finish line. Weighing in at over 500 megabytes, with nearly 300 unique NPCs, and literally hundreds of hours of play value, Lazarus is now available for both PC and Mac!

You can download the full mod (530MB) from the Team Lazarus web site or download Mac Ultima V: Lazarus Demo (Mac version / 100 MB)

  1. Just thought I’d point out to your readers that you only need a copy of Dungeon Siege or Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna to play – it’s no longer required to own a copy of the original Ultima V.

  2. Sacrelicious: Thanks to my techie dad, I was exposed to Apple all my life. I never really had a PC. Want to guess my age? It’s not hard. 😛

Heather: Merry Christmas to you too! 🙂

Gileathane Dragon: I realized my little graphic might have suggested that, but thanks for the heads up 🙂

  3. The Mac installer for the final release of Ultima V: Lazarus is available from the main website at: http://www.u5lazarus.com

Note that this a FULL RE-RELEASE, and will require you to delete your savegames and and all oalazarus files before installing. Have fun 🙂

    Gileathane Dragon,
