Family Guy: Peanut butter jelly time!

Thanks to fellow Digg-ers out there, last night’s episode of Family Guy had a strange song and dance routine which needed more explanation. In the scene where Brian the dog dances to cheer Peter up, he sings the tune “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” and wears a banana outfit to go with it. Here’s a video capturing that particular scene. Talk about mainstream media tapping on long tail. This music video caught on in 2005 as a semi-popular meme. Don’t feel bad if you didn’t see it, cause neither did I!

UPDATE: Paul Irish tells us that the video has actually been around since 2002 (see Wikipedia: Dancing Banana).

UPDATE 2: Eric of Desktop Notes 2.0 said that Peanut Butter Jelly Time is actually a song created by the Buckwheat Boys in early 2000. The Dancing Banana was part of their music video for that song and became internet pop culture around 2001 when people started to use it as an emoticon and other random animations. Oh the wonderful things one learns off the Internet!





  • The true origin of "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" dates back to 1649, when John Jif and Samuel Smucker set sail on a ship to America. It was a wicked journey, and due to harsh weather it took months longer than expected. Three months into the voyage the crew ran out of food, except for three loafs moldy bread. Luckily, Planter had brought his own secret stash of peanuts. Samuel Smucker was also on board with a secret stash of strawberry preserves. They decided they would mix the two together in order to mask the taste of the moldy bread. They were overjoyed with the taste, and began shouting "It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time". The captain had a baseball bat, so that's where that part comes from.

    well... I knew it as a "ghetto" song and dance from when I was in high school in Miami (1999-2000ish). I have yet to meet anyone who lived south of downtown Miami who remembers the video and the featured dance. It used to be a big deal if you were flexible enough to the the PB Jelly properly. If you think this banana is funny- you'll die if you saw the real dance (sadly not anywhere online).

    look, it's a silly party song. it wasn't meant to be analyzed and picked apart. y'know, a silly song, like the nursery rhymes we used to sing, except no historical meaning behind it. no sex and violence. is that so hard to accept?

    It is obvious Nicole is Black American and proud. Also obvious is a bit of anger that Blacks in this country are still highly imitated and poorly praised. We hardly recieve credit for the good or even the "cute'' things we create. We do recieve credit however for "gangster rap" and "gold teeth". I am NOT proud of either of the later.
    I have been searching the web for about an hour now and my sole purpose was to find the video of the original PBJ song that was created by the Buckwheat Boyz. Sad to say I have not found it but I have come across dozens of amatuer imitations created by white kids and/or adults along with the Family Guy clip.
    Somebody find the original so the creators can actually get the love they deserve, and people like Nicole and I will then feel satisfied and really can laugh along with everyone else.
  • OMG, lighten up a bit... Saying "us black folk" doesn't need to be taken so literally or severely. It's clear that there is a black culture in america. Even though white, asian, latinos (basically everyone) knows, loves and adopts elements of it, things like rap, hip-hop, soul food and the foundings of the civil rights movement are widely accepted as being parts of black culture.

    Back when I was in college, I was hanging out in the dorm one night with some friends, who are black, and they just broke out dancing and laughing while singing peanut butter jelly and talking about it like they knew it from being little kids and they did not grow up together and I remember thinking that's really catchy.. I wonder why I never heard it. Nicole's post actually brings all that up to the light for me.

    Did you actually refer to yourself and the entire group of people who understood what the song and dance were originally about as "US BLACK FOLKS" and all of those who didn't get it as "SQUARES?"
    I'm assuming this means that all people reguardless of color who knew originally about the song can now refer to themselves as "BLACK FOLKS" and those who didn't know are all squares.
    I love it... I'm going to go find some causasians who knew all about it, and go call them black folks... and go find some black people who have never heard it as tell them "Look, you're not one of them black folks...you're one of those squares... Nicole said so."

    i can't believe so many people like that thing. I mean, is not awful, but come on, it's just a freakin banana dancing, a stone with a drawn face is funnier than that. Ok, the song is a a bit good, but still is a damn banana dancing. Like the youtube people who only post videos about themselves looking at a webcam and doing stupid things. get a job, or a life.

    Couple years ago I saw an animated version that had a guy dancing in it instead of the banana. It was an animated guy with a real face on it, from a photo. Anyone know of this version? I think it was on albino black sheep but it's no longer there.

  • A long time ago I had seen a live action version of the "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" song. It looked like a student film. To the best of my memory the action was mainly comprised of one guy running and dancing around what looked to be a playground. If anyone has access to this version or knows a link to this version I would love to see it again. Thanks!

    The origional song by the Buckwheat boys was created in early 2000.

    i thought that this song was a joke about a song from 1994 called "the percolator". not too many people outside the ghettos of chicago know that song. it was juke music (music thats fast and bass heavy) and one of the lines was "i beat the bitch (i think a male bitch) with a baseball bat". the family guy bannana song kinda sounded like that...whatever though.

    the best place to watch it is on Albino Blacksheep, which has no pop-ups, and they only contain Google's Adwords, which are smart ads that display ads for whatever the page is about... not porn.

    I heard this song for the first time on the radio in Miami in June of '02. I loved it so much I found the MP3 online and would play it constantly in my office much to the dismay of my officemates :)

    the peanut butter jelly time song has been around since before 1999. The original lyrics were " Peanut butter jelly with a baseball bat!" "Peanut butter jelly with a baseball hat!" and then most finished it with "A sissy walk!" it's an actual dance that goes with the song!

    The song is often used on a local radio station in Pittsburgh and they make up random words to the beat and end with peanut butter jelly and a baseball bat. I believe they even have one with Steelers running back Jerome Bettis singing about all the different Steelers.

    I did see the Peanut Butter Jelly Time Before.. like in 2000 It was different it had a donky in that one .. and then another one wit the banana, strawberry clock and and mexican peppa.. but i couldnt find that one it was like a dance contest or sumin..   • It was funny even without knowing where it came from. The banana suit was peculiar, but I took it for what it was.
    My actual thought on the sequence was just that they were making fun of how dumb some rap is. I certainly would agree, with songs like My Baby Daddy and the recent Shake That Laffy Taffy.
    Finding now that Peanut Butter Jelly Time is an actual song, my morale sinks to new lows...
  • It's funny because we've been jammin to this song in the club here in Alabama for weeks now, and to see my favorite animated talking dog doing it in a banana suit with maracas (which i didnt understand) was hilarious to me. Although I havent actually seen the episode yet, the previews are showing. I cant wait til this thursday

    Actually that dancing banana has been around longer before this particular movie has been on Newgrounds. I remember seing it for the first time around my sophomore year in college (2001).There's also a lesser known dancing green apple (and i'm sure there are other fruit) but it was not fortunate to have a video made of it. The song is by the Buckwheat Boys.
