Video: Watch Mac OS X run on Sony Vaio!

Wondering if you have a step by step for how you did this? My dad has an older vaio PC tower that he doesn't use and I wanna use it to set up an editing bay running mac os.

My MacBook boot time is a flat 10 secs from the point I hit the power on button. WTF takes this laptop 20hrs to boot into Mac OS X? is it being powered by Intel Pentium 3's or something?

Check out the new lighter thinner VAIOs, the TX series. They offer portability (only 2.7 lbs!) AND power (dual layer dvd burner, 80gb hd, 1 gb ram, 1.tghz processor and 7.5 hours of battery life!). I'm wondering if those could dual boot because I'm seriously looking into getting one. Right now I've got the VAIO K series, it weighs 8 lbs with 45 minutes of battery life! I have to say though, I like VAIOs :)

That would explain my problems with the Vaio. BTW, this blog is at the top of the list on Google when searching os x sony vaio trackpad!

Robert: From what I've experienced, Sony uses proprietary components. My TR3A has no sound, no wifi and the web cam didn not work. I doubt you can get those working if they didn't work from the start. Do ask around in any existing osx86 forum.

I got OS X running on a Sony Vaio VGN-T350 using the Maxxus ISO available on Bit Torrent. Only problem is that the trackpad, keyboard and wi-fi don't work (any thoughts on a fix?) USB keyboard and mouse do work, by the way.

This is an interesting video to watch, but I'm not impressed. My Powerbook blows it away in booting speed. (I have 1.67 Ghz 17", w/ 1 GB ram.)

Also, as much as you guys complain about Mac users bashing Windows users...GET OVER IT! BOTH SIDES!

In general, my Powerbook kicks the ass of my 3Ghz desktop PC. There are a couple things the PC is better at, but that's how it goes. And for the person who complains about his Powerbook crashing, I think you might have problems with my computer. My Powerbook rarely crashes, it's been a good couple months at least sense the last time.

And Windows users, get over the one button mouse thing. I've used both one and two button mouse computers before, and have found the one button trackpad to be more efficient. And, OS X has support for two button mouses, plug one in and it will work. On top of that, apple has a multi button mouse, which also has the ability to scroll 360 degrees.

36 seconds to boot? Not impressed.

That single fact that the Vaio has a second mouse button makes it better designed that the Powerbook. Doesn't as nice though.

I am a complete computer lover and that means I love all computers because they all have there +'s, but some of you mac nut's have a problem, I recently bought my first mac which was the Imac G5 17 inch, but for you to say that basicly no laptops can even come close to powerbooks, yeh in looks, but in performance I do not know what your smoking or what junk you have been using, but my laptop just demolishes any mac laptop in speed and performance. My brother has the most expensive 17 inch mac powerbook & it crashes allot just like a pc, well you guys say that pc's crash allot & since I have upgraded to windows xp I have not had a crash, but I am a pc troubleshooter, so I know my way around a pc, so that is a plus. so come down off of your high horse snob. I like macs & pc's and use them both , but for different things because some things macs are better at doing & somethings pc's are better at doing. I also have 2 linux machines & a Beos machaine and I love them all & use them all & I rather not judge like all of the mac lovers, but come on to you guys 1ghz to our pc laptops 2.8ghz you all don't have a chance in speed, yeh I know the mac is faster then the pc doing some things, but not all and once again I love them both, but you mac lovers trash trash trash always pc's and that is not fair, because some of the same problems in the pc I have found on the mac, so get off your high horse and appreciate all technology out here for us all to use & enjoy.

My little lattitude d410 has like 6 hour battery life :D its a 12 inch screen. My 1.6 ghz powerbook is so utilitarian.. I only use my centrino book to surf the net, and basically thats it being its very portable, I can take it to classes and take notes on it. although my powerbook is thinner, and almost as light...

Good stuff, Kevin. Thanks for sharing. As others have said, it would be interesting to see how easy or hard it is to get common apps working (Office, Photoshop, etc.). As a web developer, I have three PC's, one Mac, and a Linux machine in my work area. I dream of having one laptop (preferably Dell or Apple hardware) that runs all systems. Once the Intel based Macs are out, it will be interesting to see the demo in reverse -- Windows running natively on a PowerBook. This seems the ultimate setup as there are no license restrictions with Windows OS so you could simply buy XP or Vista and add it as a second boot on an Intel based Mac. Exciting things ahead.

No offense to Mac aficionados, but I fail to see what's so special about Apple's notebook designs. They're cosmetically attractive, but that isn't the only thing that matters.

In my humble opinion, IBM's "UltraNav" interface (which now belongs to Lenovo) places relevant ThinkPad models above all otherwise similar portable computers on the market today (in the category of external design). Whether someone prefers the ubiquitous touchpad (which I personally despise) or the signature "TrackPoint" pointing stick (which I love), he/she is covered. A few competitors have imitated this interface, but no one has come close to duplicating it.

ThinkPads also are renowned for their excellent keyboards, and the white-on-black scheme (which provides superior legibility, particularly for visually impaired people) should not be discounted.

My ThinkPad has a sharp, crisp 15" display (1400x1080 native resolution), and it cost less than $1000 in March of 2004. The CPU is an Intel Pentium M at 1.3 Ghz, which was considered a respectable clock speed at the time (and continues to meet all of my needs).

I purchased an iBook for my parents (who had never owned a personal computer before), because I firmly believe that OS X's user friendliness far exceeds that of Windows (especially for those who are not accustomed to the latter operating system). From a hardware perspective, however, the machine seems entirely so-so (and considerably more expensive than many comparable alternatives). Sure, it looks pretty, but would it kill them to throw in a second mouse button? ;)

Do you have the rosetta hack running on this thing? I mean, can you actually do anything? I'd have to disagree with you on how "sexy" your laptop is though. Of course this is just an opinion... I have the Sony Vaoi VGN-T350p... and compared to an ibook or powerbook, it is still less visually appealing. To have os x running on my machine would be a dream, but to enjoy the mac experience, you really must simply purchase a mac.

I guess it's a matter of opinion... the Vaio's screen does looks sharper (1280x768) than the Powerbook's (1024x768). Also, this is a really small notebook (10.9"), way smaller than the 12" Powerbook. This Vaio also features a built-in web cam, PC Card slot, USB 2.0 on both sides, Firewire, and a DVD/CD-RW Combo drive. I'm just wishing that the 12" Powerbook could have more features... I'm a power user, but rather than carry a bulky 17" everywhere, I'd go with portability. Ideally, I wish I could have both power and portability! :)

The machine looks like ASS and I'm guessing it'll go belly up on all 64 bit operations (PPC has this wonderful habit of switching between 32 and 64 bit processing on the fly, where as x86 has to "switch" back and forth between hard boots), huh?

I'd like a demonstration of some REAL use:
For example, rendering something in Final Cut Pro or some hardcore Photoshoppage.

Just curious: Is there a compatibility list for graphics cards out there?

What an eyesore. The Vaio is one of the best looking PC laptops around and yet it's still nowhere near the design quality of a modern Powerbook. Watching the video and having your eye constantly drawn to the right for what I'm sure of incredibly important buttons melded into the casing in addition to the dark area dead center top for camera. Just amazing how even when they try to do good design, it still falls far short. As a developer I used many different laptops, the good, the bad and the ugly yet even if the Mac OS isn't your thting, the well thoughtout design and implementation of their laptop hardward is just second to none and to me, that's what makes a Mac a Mac, the experience as a whole - how everything beautifully works with everything else, the integrated whole.

I am very glad that folks who have never had a chance to see what all the fuss is about will someday soon get to see OSX, it's just somewhat jarring to see software so beautiful running on something so, well --- not.

That looks to me like it is easily rivaling the G5's, certainly faster than my 1.3ghz Powerbook...

What a show-off... I'm gonna put a Renesis engine in my Honda now...all in 3 hours.
