Who
Kevin Lim [of theory.isthereason.com] is currently pursuing his PhD in Communication and is teaching in the Educational Technology Center at the University at Buffalo (SUNY). He studies the wide-ranging cultural affordances of technology, focusing particularly on the pedagogical aspects of social media. Being passionate about making and sharing videos, Kevin is currently challenging notions of virtuality through his modular “sousveillance” backpack. In an attempt at enhancing the usefulness of video, this unique backpack allows him to experiment with lifecasting, ambient intimacy, and video as a form of memory prosthetic (also see eyetap and wearcam).

Why bother making online videos?
In an unassuming trip to Macworld Expo back in January 2006, I happened to shoot 15 minutes of the then brand new Apple MacBook Pro. Little did I know that that video clip would make me realize how important it was for me to be a blogger, especially a videoblogger.
More than half a million people watched that clip. It appeared on the front page of Youtube, Digg and every other tech-related blog. Friends called me up telling me about it, and even the Mac Geniuses at the local Apple Store said that they’ve seen it. Traffic soared, new opportunities presented themselves to me.
Recently in March, Siva, Ivan and I were in catching up over dinner at the National Library when the thought hit us. Since I knew quite a bit about sharing videos online, why not organize a public talk about it?
As mentioned in an earlier post, we’d like to share the joy by helping to build an informed videoblogging community in Singapore. As such, I’ll be giving a public talk at the National Library on sharing videos online. Above are the details so if you can, please help me spread the word.
I’ll share my personal experiences: Such as when you should use Youtube, Google Video, Revver and so on. I’ll also share basic tips on how to shoot and encode video to get the best-looking clips on the web. Finally, I’ll demo some of the exciting new things we can now do with online video. I hope all this will blow your mind and get you inspired to whip out your video camera. If you’re coming, bring your geek toys!
